Dr. Macadam at York House School

As a woman working in the largely male-dominated field of surgery, Dr. Macadam knows first-hand the challenges young women face when entering the competitive profession. With this in mind, Dr. Macadam has a keen desire to encourage and inspire young women to follow their dreams and pursue a career in medicine by sharing her own story.

In April 2015, Dr. Macadam had the great opportunity to return to her all-girls high school, York House School in Vancouver, where she was invited to speak to the eager audience of young women about her life as a female plastic surgeon and the road she’s travelled to get to where she is in her career today. She spoke of the challenges and rewards she’s encountered, both academically and personally, along the way, as well as the continued struggle to find work-life balance in this demanding profession.

Despite these challenges, Dr. Macadam was enthusiastic to share the joys and rewards of plastic surgery with the York House School students, such as the close, lasting relationships she cultivates daily with her patients. She hopes her words will inspire the next generation of young women plastic surgeons, and looks forward to more opportunities to mentor and guide women towards a career in medicine in the near future.
